Where the honest answer is that something is not proven or does not work, that is the answer given.
Can I buy CamScribe yet?
Not yet. It is built and tested and it is not released. When it ships on the Mac App Store, recording and the whole editor will be free and unlimited, and Pro will remove the mark from exports and lift the 1080p ceiling: $2.99 a month, $24.99 a year, or $99.99 once. If you want an early build, ask Olib AI and say what you record and on what Mac, because the thing it most needs now is exposure to real hardware.
What do I get without paying?
Recording, the whole multi-track editor, the prompter, retake, cards, stickers, captions, search and export. All of it, with no time limit, no project limit and no feature greyed out. An export made without Pro carries a small CamScribe mark that moves between the corners of the frame, and is produced at up to 1920 by 1080 on its long edge. Buy Pro later and the same project exports clean at full size: nothing you recorded for free is spoiled or locked away.
Does anything I record leave my Mac?
No. There is no account, no sync and no upload, and the application contains no HTTP client of its own. Nothing it records, edits, transcribes, searches or exports is ever transmitted, and all of that works with the network off. Its own networking is a listener on the loopback interface for the optional MCP server, which is your Mac talking to itself. The one thing that does need a connection is buying Pro or restoring a purchase, which is Apple’s StoreKit talking to the App Store. That carries your Apple Account and the transaction, and nothing about your recordings.
Are captions generated in the cloud?
No. Transcription runs on your Mac using the operating system’s own speech models. On macOS 26 and later it uses the newer speech analyser, which takes a whole recording in one call and carries a time range for every word; below that it falls back to the older recogniser, in on-device mode. If your Mac does not have the speech model for your language yet, macOS downloads that model from Apple, the same way it does when you add a keyboard language. That download carries no audio.
Can I record an iPhone or iPad screen?
A cabled device is discovered and appears in the source menu, and in testing it has never delivered a frame. The path exists, it is built, and it has not been made to work. Treat it as unavailable until that changes.
Does CamScribe read my keystrokes?
Only if you deliberately switch on key chord capture, which is off by default and additionally requires you to grant Accessibility to the application in System Settings. Even then, plain Shift is not treated as a chord and capture stops entirely while macOS reports secure input, which is what happens in a password field. CamScribe holds no Input Monitoring permission and installs no event tap.
What happens if my Mac crashes mid recording?
Media is written in chunks that rotate every five minutes, each one a fragmented movie, and a chunk is listed in the recording index before it closes. Recovery reads that index rather than guessing at the folder, probes only the incomplete tail, and reassembles by copying the sample data rather than re-encoding it. This has been tested against constructed packages, not against a real forced termination on your hardware.
Why does it ask for Screen Recording when I only want the camera?
It should not. Permissions are requested for the mode you chose: a camera-only recording needs the camera and, if you want narration, the microphone. Screen Recording is asked for when you are capturing a display, a window or a region.
Can an agent start a recording without me?
Only if you have turned the MCP server on and granted the record scope, and only while you are present at the Mac. Presence is measured per request from the console session, the lock state and idle time. While you are away, the only actions an agent may take are pausing and stopping, deliberately, because de-escalating capture should always be possible.
Are the AI features any good?
Unknown, honestly, and we will not put a number on it. The models that ship were trained on procedurally generated data and none has been validated against a real capture, so any accuracy figure would be a statement about the generator rather than about your recording. Each has a deterministic fallback that is the tested path rather than dead code, and three model outputs are not used at all: occlusion, multiple people in frame and audio clipping are answered by plain rules instead. The application records, edits and exports correctly with no models installed.
Is there a Windows or Linux version?
No, and there is not likely to be. CamScribe is built directly on the macOS capture, rendering and speech frameworks, and most of what makes it good is what those frameworks let it do.
